In the last week of January, the University of Rostock had the pleasure to welcome Prof. Konan Édouard KOUASSI and Prof. N’Golo Abdoulaye KONÉ; the director and deputy director of WASCAL Graduate School Program in Climate Change and Biodiversity from Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. We used this valuable opportunity to discuss possible research topics for the upcoming 6th Batch of WASCAL students and assign possible German partners for the discussed research topics. These topics were designed to align pressing challenges in West Africa with the expertise and interest of German partners. Prof. KOUASSI and Prof. KONÉ also had the opportunity to meet our team and learn about the research infrastructure and available resources provided by our institution to support WASCAL students to achieve their academic and research goals. That included engaging tours to the University of Rostock’s Botanical Garden and the facilities of our institute, which inspired our discussions on climate change and biodiversity topics. We believe their visit not only strengthened the partnership between WASCAL and NetCDA partners, but also opened new avenues for collaboration to ensure capacity building in West Africa. We look forward to welcoming the 6th Batch of WASCAL students and continuing this fruitful partnership.
